To prepare this hearty dish, you will need the following ingredients:

For the Bolognese Sauce:

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 carrot, finely diced
  • 1 celery stalk, finely diced
  • 1 pound (450 grams) ground beef
  • 1 can (14 ounces/400 grams) crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1/2 cup (120 milliliters) red wine (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For the Spaghetti:

  • 1 pound (450 grams) spaghetti
  • Salt for boiling water

Step 1: Preparing the Bolognese Sauce

  1. Heat the olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until it becomes translucent.

  1. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
  2. Once the beef is cooked through, add the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, dried oregano, dried basil, and bay leaf to the saucepan. Stir everything together to combine.
  3. If desired, pour in the red wine to enhance the flavor of the sauce. Allow it to simmer for a couple of minutes.
  4. Reduce the heat to low, cover the saucepan, and let the Bolognese sauce simmer for at least 1 hour. The longer it simmers, the richer the flavors will become. Remember to stir occasionally and adjust the seasoning with salt and pepper to taste.

Step 2: Cooking the Spaghetti

  1. Fill a large pot with water and bring it to a boil. Add a generous amount of salt to the boiling water.
  2. Gently add the spaghetti to the boiling water, stirring it initially to prevent sticking.
  3. Cook the spaghetti according to the package instructions or until al dente, which means it should be cooked but still slightly firm to the bite.
  4. Once the spaghetti is cooked, carefully drain it in a colander, reserving a small amount of the pasta water.

Step 3: Bringing It All Together

  1. Remove the bay leaf from the Bolognese sauce and discard it.
  2. Add the cooked spaghetti to the saucepan with the Bolognese sauce. If needed, add a splash of the reserved pasta water to loosen the sauce.
  3. Using tongs or a pasta fork, toss the spaghetti with the sauce until it is evenly coated.
  4. Allow the spaghetti to simmer in the sauce for a minute or two, allowing the flavors to meld together.
  5. Serve the Spaghetti Bolognese in individual bowls or on plates, garnishing with grated Parmesan cheese and fresh basil leaves, if desired.
